French Belote

Scoring

In brief

A trump deal is worth 162 points: 152 for the cards, 10 for the last trick. The taker must finish strictly ahead of the defense; otherwise the taker fails and the defense scores everything. In Coinche, the taker must also reach the contract.

Counting a trick

Add up the value of the four cards, using the trump scale for trumps (see the values).

Who wins the trick, and how much it is worth

With trump, House rules, hearts trump.

  1. South Ace of spades
  2. West 10 of spades
  3. North 7 of spades

East's hand: Jack of heartsKing of diamonds
Permitted cards: Jack of hearts

East plays the Jack of hearts. Winner: East. Trick value: 11 + 10 + 0 + 20 = 41 points.

South leads the Ace of spades, West follows with the 10, North with the 7. East has no more spades and the opponent South is winning the trick: East must trump. East's Jack of trumps wins the trick, which goes to East-West along with the points of its four cards.

The trump deal

After the 8 tricks, each team adds up its cards. The team that won the last trick adds 10 points, the team with belote-rebelote adds 20 points, and the declarations are added to the team that wins them. The two totals are then compared.

  • Taker ahead: each team scores its points.
  • Failed contract: the taker is behind. The defense scores all 162 points of the deal plus its belote; the taker keeps only the belote.
  • Tie: a perfect tie. The defense scores its points, the taker's points are held over and go to the team that wins the next deal.
  • Capot: one team wins every trick and scores 252 points.

In no-trump

In no-trump, all cards keep their non-trump value, except the Ace: it is worth 11 points under the House rules (130-point deal) and 19 under the Official rules (162-point deal). The contract rule is the same: finish ahead of the defense.

Coinche scoring

The taker succeeds by reaching the contract and finishing ahead of the defense. Capot: the taker's team must win every trick. Generale: the taker must win them all alone.

  • Made, no coinche: the taker scores their points plus the value of the contract, the defense scores its points.
  • Contract made and doubled: the declarer scores 160 plus the contract, multiplied by 2 (4 if redoubled); the defense scores only its belote.
  • Failed contract: the defense scores 160 plus the contract, multiplied the same way; the declarer keeps only their belote.
